Project: GDC 2018
Concept: Create an oasis of calm on the trade show floor while featuring demos of Rift, Go, and a variety of hot new VR titles.
Game Developers Conference (GDC) is the world’s largest professional game industry event, attracting over 27,000 programmers, artists, producers, game designers, and others involved in the development of interactive games and virtual reality (VR).
Oculus attends GDC to connect with developer partners and establish itself as the defacto VR platform of the future. The space was inspired by the look of the Oculus/Facebook campus offices. Raw plywood, exposed metal beams and a central lounge with living plants and trees – young, modern, and growing.
Given the hype of the event coupled with the bright lights, loud music, and large crowds, the guest experience can become a bit overwhelming. With that in mind, we set out to create an oasis of calm for Oculus, providing attendees with a much-needed break from the busy show floor. Within the exhibit walls, attendees were invited to relax, recharge, and engage with leading-edge VR demos.
The exhibit was a resounding success. Oculus was able to generate massive show floor buzz by focusing on what the attendees wanted most – a chance to experience its full range of virtual reality products in a soothing environment. The Oculus demos were so popular that lines formed around the entire exhibit for the duration of the show.
